It’s kinda funny how one picture can mean so much. This is me at a hula competition in 2002, 3 years after my nino and abuelita died. 2 years into therapy and 1 year after almost losing my mom to childbirth complications. I danced because it made me happy and was the story of the people I come from, but I also danced to forget everything. And though I don’t compete anymore, on nights where I want to break, I dance the stories of my people and remember their strength and somehow I always make it through.
